(n.) the action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it

Infants explore by putting foreign objects in their mouths, usually much to their parents’ horror. Teenagers explore their sexuality and raging hormones through impulsive decision making. Grade school students explore the properties of volcanic rock, why cows have four stomachs, and synonyms for the lighthearted and jovial interpretation of gay. Once they toss the hat, young adults begin to explore their autonomy and seek out their niche in the world. The elderly explore newfound solace as the pace of everyday life begins to slow along with their step.

These are transitional chapters of life we are all invited to. But, every single time we decide to leave our comfort zones, we are explorers. Whether it be replacing a bad habit, trying a new food, having an open discussion with someone of a different opinion, allowing ourselves to be emotionally available to new love, or journeying to a faraway land.

I explore foreign territories, both inwardly and outwardly. And with every uncharted encounter, I expand.
